This technique and how it is presented is the result of decades of helping actors connect more with the work and win awards. Auditioning by Heart’s Wed2Wed Workshop is like a 20 year masterclass in a single “eight day” workshop! It will cover how to physically, emotionally and intellectually support yourself, so that you effortlessly become the character. You’ll see how easy it is to set-up the imaginary world at your audition-tapings, so that you can easily react from the truth without breaking the CD’s rules. In this intimate class setting, you’ll receive personalized feedback in a kind and honest way. This proven method will not only have you book more often, but you’ll have more fun doing it!
Because actors are willing to rearrange their schedules to come to Artisan Resource Center in Marietta, learn and practice for roughly 5 hours on each in-class day, and 90 minutes on each out-of-class day for 1 week, it’s clear to us that their commitment and dedication to honing their craft in the Southeast is truly commendable.
While we deeply respect your current process, please put your whole heart into taking on this new approach, and see what happens over one week’s time. (Later, you may find a wonderful way to blend this work with the way in which you have been working.)
Auditioning by Heart only asks for a single on-again, off-again week of attention toward this mind-blowing method. You’ll be profoundly glad you did it. —AbH Team
Why the 8 day, on-again, off-again schedule?
A 4-day gathering in the classroom (20 hours over the week) PLUS 4 days of homework (w/self taping, ZOOM and email exchanges) outside of the classroom, in-between the gathering dates, has many scientifically tested & proven benefits!
1) It allows you to sleep on what you learned in class before putting it into practice. When you learn something new, the best way to remember it is to sleep on it. That's because sleeping helps strengthen memories you've formed throughout the day. It also helps to link new memories to earlier ones. And a full night of sleep may help with problem-solving. study-nih.gov
2) 20 hours over 1 week’s time is the ideal timeframe necessary, both for Crystal to teach the method, and the amount of time it takes to learn something new when using “deliberate practice.” (See Josh Kaufman “the frustration barrier”) Crystal implements “deliberate practice” in her teachings. Learn more about “deliberate practice” here.
3) It doesn’t allow too much time between what you learned in class and putting the new technique into practice. Waiting more time, has diminishing returns as synapses retract without the reinforcement within 48 hours. Activated synapses decrease in size and less effectively depolarize the postsynaptic membrane, depending on how often the stimulation is repeated within a 48 hour time-frame. To learn something new quickly & efficently, a week between classes is too long.
4) It allows time for the other things in your life that need to be done, rather than holding an all-day, back-to-back-days workshop. It therefore lowers your stress & worry about finances and duties outside of learning. High levels of stress can impair cognitive function, attention, and memory retrieval, leading to difficulties in concentrating, processing information, and retaining new knowledge. NIM
5) It allows for exercise in the morning of your off-days: Physical exercise has many positive effects on synapses, including:
Increasing synapse numbers (synaptogenesis) and plasticity, Improving memory
Exercise can increase the number of new synapses in the brain, and their ability to change to retain something newly learned. Exercise can improve memory by increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which helps form new synapses. Exercise promotes the release of neurogenic factors (Choi et al., 2018), maturation of new neurons (Lattanzi et al., 2022), and cerebral angiogenesis (Tang et al., 2018).
Preserving synaptic integrity and attenuating neurodegeneration
Exercise can increase presynaptic protein levels, which helps strengthen & preserve synaptic integrity, helping to retain the newly learned skill for a longer time. A. Kimberley McAllister
Improving mental health
Regular exercise can improve and regulate neurotransmitter levels, which can help us be mentally healthy and more positive.
Auditioning by Heart’s Wed2Wed is for actors who have decided to stop “schmacting”* and to start truly acting** from their heart and soul, who’ve chosen to stop “performing” but to “generate the journey” instead. Intimacy is the key, turn it and your acting career unlocks.
Stop “doing it right”, and start “doing the fight”. Life isn’t perfect, and so living inside the character’s world can, and should, be messy!
In these 8 days, you’ll find yourself thinking, absorbing, sweating, processing, taking notes, laughing, crying, agreeing, squirming and maybe even holding your breath…and you will truly know what it means to be an actor!
Let’s have fun, and touch the hearts of the world in a way that makes a positive difference!
* SCHMACTING is pre-shaping your performance to go a certain way, and doing your best to make sure that it does.
** ACTING is doing your homework, and then putting your attention on the other character in the scene, which will cause various reactions in you.
